Position Overview

A manufacturing facility in Gastonia, NC is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Laser Operator to support weekend production operations. The Laser Operator will be responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring laser cutting equipment used to cut and fabricate sheet metal components according to blueprints, engineering drawings, work orders, and production specifications.

Candidates must have previous experience operating laser machines. The ideal candidate will also have strong measurement skills and the ability to work accurately in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Candidates must be comfortable working with various types of sheet metal, including steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized metal.

This position works under the supervision and direction of production and pre-fabrication management.

Key Responsibilities

Laser Machine Setup and Operation

• Set up and operate laser cutting equipment according to production requirements.

• Load the correct sheet metal sizes and materials into the machine.

• Enter or adjust machine settings, cutting parameters, and production specifications.

• Perform daily machine startup and shutdown procedures.

• Monitor machine operation to ensure consistent and accurate cutting.

• Operate two or more machines with limited supervision when required.

• Identify and troubleshoot basic machine or production issues.

• Report equipment malfunctions or deficiencies to the appropriate supervisor.

Blueprint and Measurement Interpretation

• Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, work orders, and production specifications.

• Accurately use tape measures, gauges, calipers, and other measuring tools.

• Verify that completed parts meet required measurements and tolerances.

• Confirm that the correct materials and part specifications are used for each production order.

Material Handling and Part Processing

• Stage raw materials at the work center based on the daily production schedule.

• Inspect sheet metal for damage, defects, or imperfections before production.

• Remove completed parts from sheets of metal after the cutting process.

• Deburr, sort, stack, and organize finished parts.

• Label parts with the correct part numbers.

• Place completed parts in the appropriate pallets, containers, or kitting boxes.

• Maintain accurate material identification throughout the production process.

Quality Control

• Inspect finished components for accuracy, quality, and compliance with specifications.

• Check dimensions and tolerances using appropriate measuring tools.

• Identify and separate defective or nonconforming materials.

• Report quality concerns to the supervisor or quality control team.

• Take corrective action within the operator’s level of responsibility.

Machine Maintenance

• Perform routine operator-level maintenance on laser cutting equipment.

• Clean, lubricate, and inspect equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.

• Replace basic machine components, such as switches or cylinders, when trained and authorized.

• Keep the machine, surrounding area, and production tools clean and organized.

• Notify management of any repairs or maintenance needs outside the operator’s responsibility.

Production and Documentation

• Follow the production schedule provided by management.

• Maintain accurate production records, including material usage, quantities completed, machine settings, and downtime.

• Meet production deadlines while maintaining quality and safety standards.

• Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and improve production flow.

• Communicate production progress, delays, or concerns to supervisors and team members.

Safety and Teamwork

• Follow all workplace safety rules, machine operating procedures, and personal protective equipment requirements.

• Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and material-handling equipment as assigned.

• Maintain a clean and hazard-free work area.

• Communicate professionally with coworkers, supervisors, engineering personnel, and quality control staff.

• Assist other production areas when needed and trained.

• Participate in safety meetings, training programs, and continuous improvement activities.

Required Qualifications

• Previous experience operating laser machines is required.

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.

• Ability to read and understand blueprints, technical drawings, and production specifications.

• Ability to accurately read a tape measure and use basic measuring tools.

• Familiarity with sheet metal materials, including steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and galvanized metal.

• Experience using hand tools and power tools.

• Basic mechanical and troubleshooting skills.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

• Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and management.

• Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and meet production deadlines.

• Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical training or certification in CNC machining, metal fabrication, or a related field.

• Experience setting up and calibrating laser cutting equipment.

• Experience performing basic machine maintenance.

• Experience working in a sheet metal fabrication or manufacturing environment.

• Knowledge of quality inspection procedures and manufacturing tolerances.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to frequently lift, push, pull, carry, and handle materials weighing more than 30 pounds.

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during a 12-hour shift.

• Ability to bend, stoop, reach, squat, and perform repetitive movements.

• Ability to safely handle sheet metal and finished components.

• Ability to work around machinery, noise, metal materials, and changing production conditions.

• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
